![]() Ribbon Snake that had obviously just had a nice little meal.Īs I was photographing the Red Milk Snake, Steve and Ralph rolled up in the parking lot.I think they were pretty stoked when the saw what we were photographingĪfter Steve and Ralph were done photographing the Milk Snake, we ventured down Snake Rd. One of the little Zigzag Salamanders that we were finally able to catch So I wandered off across the parking lot and told him I was going to go find a hot.and about two steps into the brush (aka poison ivy) I found this juvenile Cottonmouth. Not the greatest shot, but we couldn't get very close to these guys without them bolting under the log!Īt this point I was getting kind of annoyed because Andrew was the one finding everything. It was seriously just one right after another! Then after that we found a Ringneck, a pair of 5 lined skinks, Zigzag salamander, Cottonmouth, Ribbon Snake, and a Red Milk Snake all within about 5-7 minutes. I was only a couple feet away from him when I snapped these first few shots.Īndrew and I assumed that he was injured, so we hiked back down to the bottom to try to get a hold of the ranger to see if they wanted to go check on him to make sure he was okay.Īs we were walking past the gate at Snake Rd we passed this Garter Snake going into shed. So, Andrew and I took advantage of the opportunity and snapped some macro shots. He had obviously just left the nest, and didn't really know what to do. It ended up being a juvenile Great Horned Owl. We were nearly all the way to the top when I heard Andrew yell "Holy I'm behind him of course thinking there is a rattler up there or something.far from it! On our way up we saw a gravid Fence Lizard: ![]() and we had found nothing. So, we decided to hike up to the top of some cliffs in hopes of finding some Timber Rattlesnakes. At that point we were starting to get pretty annoyed because we had heard about all the things people find at Snake Rd. for probably an hour or so with no luck in finding any sort of reptile or amphibian. The first thing Andrew and I came across was this female Eastern Box Turtle. But, I guess we shouldn't complain too much about that considering all the other species we found. 43 different species in 3 days.there was only one that we were not able to check off of our list of things we hoped to find and that was a Timber Rattlesnake. I'm really glad they allowed a girl to tag along, because I had a blast!Īndrew and I were really glad we were able to make the trip, as it was a major success. **BTW, I think I posted this in the wrong section before.sorry mods**Īndrew and I ventured over to southern Illinois to meet up with Jeff Lemm, Steve Barten, Gery Herman, Ralph (?) and a bunch of other guys from the Chicago area to do some field herping for the weekend. So I just joined the forums here after lurking for awhile, which is why this is so late.better late than never I suppose.
